AirTag 2 Range: Tested Distances in Every Environment

AirTag 2 Precision Finding reaches 60 meters (200 feet). The original topped out at 15 meters. That 4x improvement comes from Apple's second-generation UWB chip and a new nRF52840 Bluetooth radio.
Bluetooth Low Energy range stays around 100 meters in open air for both models. But UWB is what powers the directional arrow, distance readout, and haptic guidance that actually help you find things.
Find My network range is unchanged: worldwide, wherever Apple devices exist.
AirTag 2 vs AirTag 1: Range Comparison
Every major review outlet tested both models side-by-side. The pattern is consistent: AirTag 2 picks up signal where the original shows "Searching..."
| Environment | AirTag 1 Precision Finding | AirTag 2 Precision Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open air, line of sight | ~15m (50 ft) | ~60m (200 ft) | Apple specs |
| Through 2 walls | Lost signal | 15m detection, 11m pinpoint | Macworld |
| Through walls + closed door, 60 ft | No signal | Arrow at ~50 ft | CNN Underscored |
| Walking away outdoors | Cut out at 50 ft | Held to 74 ft | Tom's Guide |
| Different floor of building | No signal | Maintained connection | MacRumors |
| Through walls, obstructed | 10-12 ft effective | 35 ft reliable | Multiple reviewers |
Tom's Guide measured a 1.48x improvement in raw Bluetooth connection distance (74 ft vs 50 ft). The Precision Finding improvement is larger because UWB is more sensitive to the chip upgrade than BLE.
Three Types of AirTag Range
AirTag range is not one number. Three distinct systems, each with different reach.
1. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Range
The raw radio connection between your iPhone and the AirTag. Determines whether Find My can see the tag at all when you are nearby.
| Condition | AirTag 1 | AirTag 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoors, open air | 30m (100 ft) | 30-40m (100-130 ft) |
| Indoors, open room | 10-15m (30-50 ft) | 15-20m (50-65 ft) |
| Through drywall | 5-10m (15-30 ft) | 10-15m (30-50 ft) |
| Through concrete | 3-5m (10-15 ft) | 5-8m (15-25 ft) |
| Metal container | Blocked | Blocked |
The nRF52840 in AirTag 2 has better radio sensitivity than the nRF52832 in the original. This translates to modest BLE range gains, not the dramatic 4x improvement seen in UWB.
2. UWB Precision Finding Range
The directional arrow, distance counter, and haptic feedback. Requires a U1 or U2 chip in your iPhone or Apple Watch.
AirTag 1: ~15m (50 ft) max. Requires iPhone 11 or later.
AirTag 2: ~60m (200 ft) max. Full range on iPhone 15+ (U2 chip), Apple Watch Series 9+, and Apple Watch Ultra 2+. Falls back to U1-level range on iPhone 11-14.
The U2 chip improves both ranging accuracy and angle-of-arrival measurements:
- Faster signal lock-on when you open Find My
- Directional arrow stays stable at greater distances
- Better performance through walls and floors
- Works across large indoor spaces like airports and warehouses
3. Find My Network Range
Unlimited. Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac acts as a relay. When any Apple device passes within BLE range of your AirTag, it encrypts the location and uploads it to Apple's servers.
Over 1 billion active Apple devices participate. The AirTag needs no phone, Wi-Fi, or cellular. Just one Apple device walking by.
| Location Type | Update Frequency |
|---|---|
| Airport terminal | Every 1-3 minutes |
| City street | Every 1-5 minutes |
| Shopping mall | Every 1-5 minutes |
| Office building | Every 1-10 minutes |
| Suburban parking lot | Every 15-60 minutes |
| Highway (parked nearby) | Every 30 min - 2 hours |
| Rural area | Hours to days |
AirTag 2 Range by Real-World Scenario
Warehouse or Distribution Center
The 60m Precision Finding range covers most warehouse aisles end-to-end. A worker with an iPhone 15+ can stand at one end and get a directional arrow to the tagged pallet, tool, or cart. With the original, they would need to walk within 15m first.
The speaker is 50% louder at 85-87 dB (roughly a food blender). The original's 66 dB was hard to hear over ambient warehouse noise.
Construction Site
On an open job site, BLE carries 30-40m. Precision Finding guides you from 60m in open conditions. Through a trailer wall, expect 10-15m, enough to confirm which trailer holds the item.
Find My network coverage depends on how many iPhones are on-site. A crew of 20 provides decent coverage. A remote site with 3 workers may see 30+ minute gaps.
Vehicle Lot or Parking Area
Open-air parking is close to ideal for UWB. AirTag 2 guides you across a lot from 60m, compared to 15m with the original. For fleet managers, this is the difference between systematic searching and walking directly to the right vehicle.
Office Building
AirTag 2 maintains Precision Finding through walls and across floors. MacRumors confirmed it held a connection on a different floor where the original lost signal entirely. Expect 10-15m through interior walls, depending on material.
Through Metal
Both models are blocked by solid metal enclosures. Shipping containers, safes, and sealed metal toolboxes kill BLE and UWB signals. Position the AirTag where signal can escape: near a vent, gap, or non-metal surface.
What Affects AirTag Range
Reduces Range
Physical materials. Concrete cuts range 40-60%. Metal blocks signal entirely. Water (including the human body) reduces range 30-50%. Drywall has minimal impact.
RF interference. Dense Wi-Fi, other Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens, and fluorescent lighting all add noise. A warehouse full of IoT sensors will see shorter BLE range than an empty one.
Battery level. A dying CR2032 reduces transmit power. Both models use the same battery. Expected life: about 1 year.
Temperature. Below 0C or above 35C, range degrades. Outdoor tags in freezing winters or hot dashboards will underperform.
Increases Range
Elevation. A tag mounted high on equipment or near a window gets better line-of-sight to passing devices.
Line of sight. No walls, no obstructions. Outdoor, elevated, unobstructed: this is where you hit 60m+ on Precision Finding.
Fresh battery. A new CR2032 outputs full transmit power from day one.
Device density. More Apple devices nearby means more frequent Find My updates. Dense urban areas update every few minutes. Rural areas may take hours.
AirTag 2 Range vs Competitors
| Tracker | BLE Range | Precision Finding | Network Size | Monthly Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirTag 2 | ~40m (130 ft) | 60m directional | 1B+ Apple devices | $0 |
| AirTag 1 | ~30m (100 ft) | 15m directional | 1B+ Apple devices | $0 |
| Tile Pro | ~120m (400 ft) | None | 50M Tile users | $0-3/mo |
| Samsung SmartTag 2 | ~120m (390 ft) | 30m (Galaxy UWB phones) | Samsung Galaxy users | $0 |
| Chipolo ONE Point | ~60m (200 ft) | Via Find My (15m) | 1B+ Apple devices | $0 |
| GPS Tracker (cellular) | N/A | N/A | Anywhere with cell signal | $10-30/mo |
AirTag's BLE range is shorter than Tile or Samsung. The advantage is network size: 1 billion+ Apple devices relay locations passively. Tile's 50 million users cannot match that density.
Samsung's SmartTag 2 has UWB on Galaxy phones, but Galaxy device density is far lower in the US and Europe.
Which iPhone and Apple Watch Models Support Full AirTag 2 Range
AirTag 2's extended Precision Finding requires a U2 chip.
Full 60m Precision Finding (U2 chip):
- iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max (excluding 16e)
- iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max (excluding 17e)
- Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10
- Apple Watch Ultra 2, Ultra 3
Reduced ~15m Precision Finding (U1 chip):
- iPhone 11 through iPhone 14 (all models)
No Precision Finding:
- iPhone SE (all generations)
- iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e
- Apple Watch SE (all generations)
- Apple Watch Series 8 and earlier
If your team uses older iPhones, AirTag 2 still works for BLE detection and Find My network tracking. You lose the extended directional guidance.
AirTag Range for Business Tracking
For businesses managing fleets, equipment, or inventory, the AirTag 2 range improvements affect daily operations.
Warehouse inventory. Workers find tagged items faster. 60m Precision Finding covers most warehouse sections without walking every aisle. The louder speaker cuts search time further.
Construction equipment. On a site with 10-20 tagged assets, a foreman can scan from a central point and get directional arrows within 60m. The original required walking to within 15m of each item.
Vehicle fleets. In a lot with 50 vehicles, AirTag 2 covers the entire lot from a central position. The original required walking row by row.
Tool checkout. When a tool does not return to the crib, the louder speaker and longer Precision Finding range make physical recovery faster.
If you manage more than a handful of AirTags, AirPinpoint provides the dashboard layer: location history, geofence alerts, team sharing, and API access. AirTag 2 drops into existing AirPinpoint setups with zero changes.
FAQ
What is the range of AirTag 2?
Three ranges. BLE: ~40m (130 ft) outdoors, less through walls. UWB Precision Finding: up to 60m (200 ft) with a U2-equipped iPhone or Apple Watch. Find My network: worldwide.
Is AirTag 2 range better than AirTag 1?
Yes. Precision Finding improved from 15m to 60m (4x). BLE improved modestly from ~30m to ~40m outdoors. Find My network range is the same (unlimited) since it depends on Apple device density, not AirTag hardware.
How far can AirTag 2 track?
No distance limit. The Find My network uses 1 billion+ Apple devices worldwide to relay locations. An AirTag 2 in another country shows up in Find My as long as Apple devices pass near it. The 60m Precision Finding range only applies to the last step: walking to the item with directional guidance.
Does AirTag 2 work through walls?
Yes. CNN Underscored got a directional arrow at 50 ft through walls and a closed door. Macworld detected it at 15m through two walls. Concrete and metal reduce range more than drywall. Solid metal blocks signal entirely.
Does AirTag 2 Precision Finding work on Apple Watch?
Yes. AirTag 2 is the first AirTag with Apple Watch Precision Finding. Requires Series 9+, or Ultra 2+, running watchOS 26.2.1+. The original AirTag does not support this.
How far can you track an AirTag without your phone?
Worldwide. The AirTag broadcasts a BLE signal that any of the 1 billion+ Apple devices in Find My can pick up. Check the location from any Apple device signed into your iCloud account, or from iCloud.com.
AirTag 2 range vs GPS tracker range?
GPS trackers use cellular for continuous, real-time tracking. AirTag 2 uses Find My for periodic updates wherever Apple devices exist. Different tradeoffs:
| Feature | AirTag 2 | GPS Tracker |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking range | Worldwide (via Find My) | Worldwide (via cellular) |
| Update frequency | Depends on Apple device density | Continuous (every 10-60 sec) |
| Works indoors | Yes | GPS signal blocked indoors |
| Works without cell signal | Yes | No |
| Monthly cost | $0 | $10-30 |
| Battery life | ~1 year | Days to weeks |
| Hardware cost | $29 | $50-200 |
Why does my AirTag only update when I am nearby?
The item is likely in a low-traffic area where few Apple devices pass by. Other possibilities: Find My network disabled on your iPhone (check Settings > your name > Find My), low battery, or iCloud sync issues. Moving the AirTag to a more visible position (near a window, higher up) improves detection.
Track Hundreds of AirTags From One Dashboard
Managing AirTags for business? AirPinpoint gives you what Find My does not:
- Location history for every tagged asset
- Geofence alerts when items leave a job site, warehouse, or yard
- Team access so multiple people can track without sharing an Apple ID
